The Master of Philosophy programme in Religion and Culture is offered by the Faculty of Theology at Stellenbosch University in partnership with the Oxford Centre for Religion and Public Life (OCRPL). The programme includes substantial original research topics in the area of political theology, public theology, inter-religious engagements. It will also cover the fields of reconciliation, peace and justice, with a focus on Islam.

Who the Course is for

The MPhil in Religion and Culture has been designed especially for those Christian leaders who may need to enhance their knowledge and intellectual views in a wider multidisciplinary framework of religious and cultural studies with a focus on Islam. Therefore this programme is for:

Those Christian leaders or prospective leaders who have some experience of multi- religious engagement, especially some previous experience and knowledge of Islam, and have a desire to gain a deeper understanding of Islam within their religious context.


Those who aspire to pursue academic writing and publication in the area of religion and culture studies.


Those who aim to teach religion and culture with a focus on Islam at undergraduate and postgraduate level.


Those who desire to do further research at PhD level


Tuition fees:

The tuition fee for the duration of the two-year MPhil programme is generally ZAR 74,914 or USD4,800.

However, OCRPL’s successful candidates will not be charged for the first six months. Therefore, the total tuition fee is ZAR 56,276 or USD3600.
